Kids and hydration

As students head back to school, it's important to remember the importance of staying hydrated throughout the day. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining focus and concentration however, with so many distractions it can be difficult for our kids to keep drinking water, especially in the summer heat.

According to the Australian Institute of Sport, adults should aim to drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water per day, while children should drink at least 1 to 1.5 litres. This might sound like a lot but think about when you were at school and how much running around and playing you did. Active kids lose so much fluid!

When the body is dehydrated, it can lead to a number of symptoms such as fatigue, headaches and the all-time worse symptom for parents is restlessness!

To ensure that kids are getting enough water throughout the day, it's important for them to have a good quality water bottle on-hand. Reason is kids may take big drinks during lunch time at the bubblers but by having a water bottle in the classroom helps keep them sipping throughout the day.

Another way to ensure proper hydration is by consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, and strawberries, which can help re-hydrate.

In summary, sipping all day on water and eating water-rich foods can really help kids stay happy, healthy and hydrated at school and a little less restless for parents once school finishes.
